The session focused on practical difficulties encountered when technologies meet operational conditions, including uncertain results, challenging environments and tensions between speed, reliability and rights. A panel moderated by Professor James Ferryman of the University of Reading provided a setting for comparing experiences across the three domains.

ARIEN also featured in the afternoon project showcase, which introduced the problems addressed by participating initiatives, their operational contexts and emerging lessons. Its contribution presented the project’s mission and results concerning AI-supported investigations into illicit drug production and trafficking.

The wider programme included a keynote from John Riemen of the Dutch National Police and a presentation on independent evaluation of biometric technology in the EU. Afternoon working groups examined degraded operating environments, speed and legal constraints, multisource identity information, and human factors and trust. Their task was to identify research needs and recommendations for future programmes.

For ARIEN, participation connected its investigative research with questions shared across security applications: how to interpret uncertain information, understand technological limitations and support informed decisions in demanding environments. The event offered an opportunity to exchange perspectives with projects working in different operational settings while discussing challenges relevant to responsible technology use.

Explore the event programme:
EABxCERIS 2026

Read the conference guide:
EABxCERIS 2026 Conference Guide

Operational constraints, reliable identification and trust were central themes at “Biometrics Under Pressure: Reliable Identity in Complex Operational Environments”, held on 15 September 2026 at Fraunhofer […]

[7

post-1197","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
