New EU Drugs Strategy and the Role of EU Security Research

Drug trafficking in Europe is evolving rapidly. Routes are shifting, violence is increasing, and highly potent synthetic and stimulant substances are entering markets at unprecedented speed. The consequences extend far beyond criminal networks — affecting public health, environmental safety, community stability, and the protection of young people.

To address these growing threats, the European Commission has presented a new EU Drugs Strategy alongside a five-year Action Plan against drug trafficking. The objective is clear: safeguard citizens’ well-being and strengthen Europe’s security by disrupting the criminal ecosystems that sustain this trade.

The new Strategy and Action Plan aim to protect public health and societal well-being; reduce supply through coordinated disruption of criminal networks; strengthen cross-border cooperation; enhance investigative and detection capacities; improve resilience against emerging drug market trends.

Addressing modern drug trafficking requires more than enforcement — it demands intelligence-led, technology-enabled, and forward-looking solutions.

EU-funded security research projects are playing a central role in strengthening Europe’s response capacity. Through innovation in detection technologies, AI-powered analysis, and advanced screening systems, these initiatives provide operational tools to law enforcement agencies and customs authorities.

ARIEN is proud to contribute to this collective effort, ensuring that Artificial Intelligence solutions are developed responsibly, aligned with EU values, and capable of delivering measurable operational impact in the fight against drug trafficking.
