ARIEN Project at the National Drug Coordinators Meeting on AI and Advanced Technologies
The ARIEN project took part in the National Drug Coordinators Meeting, held on 16–17 December 2025, entitled “Future challenges and possibilities: Threats and opportunities of AI and other advanced technologies”, through the participation of the project coordinator.
The meeting brought together national drug coordinators and key European stakeholders to discuss the rapidly evolving landscape of drug trafficking and drug-related crime, and the growing role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies are playing in this field. Particular attention was given to how technological innovation can support more effective policy-making, prevention strategies and operational responses, while also addressing the risks and ethical challenges associated with their use.
Discussions highlighted the dual nature of emerging technologies: on the one hand, their potential to enhance detection capabilities, data analysis, risk assessment and cross-border cooperation; on the other, the need to ensure responsible deployment, transparency and respect for fundamental rights in complex and sensitive policy areas.
Within this context, ARIEN’s participation contributed to the broader European reflection on how technology-driven solutions can support public authorities and law enforcement agencies in addressing increasingly sophisticated criminal networks. The project’s objectives and activities are closely aligned with the priorities discussed during the meeting, particularly in relation to innovation, interoperability and evidence-based approaches.
By engaging in this high-level forum, ARIEN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting European cooperation and to contributing knowledge and insights that help shape future strategies at both national and EU level.
Innovation, cooperation and a forward-looking approach remain central to ARIEN’s work, as the project continues to explore how advanced technologies can be leveraged responsibly to strengthen security and protect society.
